Toddler Car Seats
Unlike infant car seats that must be installed in a rear-facing position,
toddler car seats need to be installed in a forward facing position. Most of them will have maximum weight limits, as well as having minimum weight limits.
Also unlike
the infant car seats which double as a carrier, the majority of
toddler car seats do not have a removable base as did the infant car seat. Some, though certainly not all, convert into a stroller base, thus incorporating two things at once.
Exact compatibility is vital though, thus prior to use any seat with a stroller base, it is
highly recommended that you check with the manufacturer or find the compatibility recommendations in the user’s information booklet.
Because a five-point harness is considered a good portion of what allows survivor ability in a serious car crash, you should make sure that such a harness is available for your
toddler car seats as well as the infant car seats.
Some toddler car seats are also referred to as
combination car seats. These combination seats still have a 5-point harness for your use, but usually they can only be used up to 40 lbs. and then the seat can be used as a belt-positioning-booster seat. This is after the 5-point harness has been removed.
When shopping for toddler car seats these seats will, of course, register a much higher weight capacity than what can be used using the 5-point harness. This is because they take into account
the booster seat weight capacity. This is normally around 80 lbs. for most booster seats, so purchasing a combination car seat may be a money-saver in the long run.
Now some people will already have bought “infant/toddler” car seats, meaning that they convert from being rear positioned infant car seats to front-facing toddler car seats. This makes
the initial cost higher, however in the long run that could conceivably save you quite a bit of money.
When purchasing toddler car seats, look for the
ease of installation first, make sure that the restraints are totally adequate, be sure you understand how to adjust the belt adjustments and make sure that they have been done properly, The LATCH system is a marvel in all cars made after 2001, and that has made proper installation of all car seats, including toddler car seats much easier.
LATCH, by the way stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, and today it combines the previously existing top tethers with two lower anchors, that are actually built into the rear of the car to
insure your child’s safety.
Washability is going to be a large factor for you. Some of the pads and such are not removable, nor machine washable, and some are not capable of being dried in the dryer. One wonders if the designers of such systems have even had children who drop food, spit up or had diapers that leaked?
